“He keepeth back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword” (Job 33:18).
TEXT — Job 33:14-22
On his deathbed, Sir Walter Scott, the Scottish poet and novelist, told his secretary: “Bring me the Book!” When asked what book, he replied, “There is but one book… the only Book for a dying man.” Scott was a great Christian who found the Bible, the only Book for a dying manand the only Book for a living man because it is the Word of life and his hope in temptations and death.
Job was not on his deathbed, but he was going through near-death bodily pains and depression after losing all his children,businesses, and property. He also had a supportive wife and friends who could not comfort him in his despair. He needed the God who does not desert those in straits; who has the best soothing counsel and comfort for every discouraged and depressed soul.And that was what Elihu gave him. He spoke of a good Lord who “hide(s) pride from man… (who) keepeth back his soul from the pit and his life from perishing by the sword.”
The world is writhing in regional conflicts, threatening to escalate into a global one, and God’s word is needed for stability. The system that modern civilization has given man has not yielded positive results. Instead, it has brought the world more sorrow, as did Job’s friends. Man is at his wit’s end, unable to help himself. Only a Lord who chastens lovingly can restore hope and life to the world.
This is the message for our world today. We must have the right disposition to invite and embrace God and His teachings into the affairs of our lives and world. Job did not have a reversal of his fortunes until God spoke into his deplorable condition. Let the Church also speak heaven’s message of the new birth and righteousness into the lives of men and women of the world so they can transit from their spiritual deathbeds to life under the watch of Jehovah God.
