TEXT — Leviticus 11:1,2
Message
The first known coronavirus infections were discovered in Wuhan, China. The original source of viral transmission to humans remains unclear but because many of the early infected people were workers at the Huanan Seafood Market, it has been suggested that the virus might have originated from the market through the food sold there.
God, under the Mosaic laws, stipulated for Israel the categories of animals and birds to be eaten and those that were forbidden. The instruction was very clear. Truth is, not everything created by God are good for our health. There are plants and animal species that are naturally poisonous. Whatever God does or says has a reason. Jews, till date, have continued to observe this ordinance although with some modifications.
Under the New Testament economy, whatever we eat or drink, we must do that to the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31). Early Christian leaders of the church age did not bind themselves and their followers with observance of most of the ceremonial Mosaic laws. The first church council held in Jerusalem for instance resolved that the new Gentile converts should be advised to abstain from pollution of idols, fornication, things strangled and from blood (Acts 15:20,29). The ceremonial aspect of the law of Moses was not imposed.
As believers, we are free and all things created by God are to be received with thanksgiving. However, that does not mean we should eat food that is harmful to the body. We should be sensitive to how our body systems work, and be careful what we eat. There is need to maintain proper hygiene and eat balanced and safe diet.
