“I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do”(John 17:4).
TEXT — John 17:1-4
Message
When the Bible says in Genesis 2:1 that “The heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them,” there is a finality that informs us that there was no plan by the Lord for any physical restructuring to add to His work or subtract from it. This is contrary to the position of some people that the Lord is still creating new lands all over the planet to take in a burgeoning population. He foresaw a progressive increase and made room for it.
So it is with our Redeemer’s statement that He had finished the work which God gave Him to do. As He was rounding off His earthly ministry, He offered a prayer in which He first requested the Father to glorify Him in the face of His impending crucifixion. He eventually concluded the unique assignment of coming to the world to bear the sin of man through death and thereby, save us. Christ’s redemptive feat is a concluded product that requires no adjustments.
Generation after generation of all races and classes have benefited from the salvation Christ brought. He, not being an author of halfway projects, said concerning His deliverance of fallen man, “It is finished”. Followers of Christ are to queue behind the Saviour to declare joyfully to the world that Jesus has worked out their salvation. No human intervention is required again.
Those genuinely wishing to be partakers of His salvation must not be misled into believing that they need to fulfil certain preconditions that border on human effort. As truly saved Christians, we must tell the world that the salvation Jesus brought is not subject to revision like man-inspired inventions and writings. It is a final feat processed and settled in heaven.
Thought for the day
Christ’s redemptive work for human race is comprehensive.
Listed among “500 most powerful people on the planet” by the Foreign Policy magazine in 2013, Pastor (Dr.) William F. Kumuyi is the founder and General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry (DCLM) headquartered in Lagos, Nigeria. DCLM started in 1973 as a 15-member Bible study group right in Kumuyi’s apartment at University of Lagos where he was a lecturer. His revolutionary Bible teaching on personal holiness and commitment to evangelism soon gained so much traction and resulted in a widespread revival.
