“Retribution For Rebellion”

Key Verse

“And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great” (Revelation 16:21).

TEXT — Revelation 16:13-21

Message

President Bush Snr might have spoken the mind of most conservative Americans stuck with the 1980s junk food culture that has negatively impacted the nation’s health when he said, “I haven’t liked it since I was a little kid. And my mother made me eat it. Now, I’m president of the United States. And I’m not gonna eat any more broccoli”. Though the U.S. spends more on healthcare than other advanced countries around the globe, her health outcomes are worse. Unfortunately, she’s yet to learn from her mistakes.

So it is with the situation in our text. Despite the myriads of warnings from heaven, rulers and people of the world have learnt no lesson about the God who is “a consuming fire”. They remain adamant, kicking against His commandments. Since God’s Spirit shall not always strive with man, swift judgment would rain down upon disobedient men and nations of the world. Plagues would come in succession without restraint.

God has set a day when He will judge humanity. Today, man may appear to be having unrestrained freedom with sin, failing to pay attention to His warning of the coming judgment day. But gradually and certainly, the day of retribution for the rebellion and sinfulness of man is closing in. There will be no way of escape or hiding for the guilty when that day comes.

Today is a day to decide on whose side you will be. Will you choose good or evil, obedience or rebellion against the Almighty? There is no middle ground in this instance. Those on the devil’s side will perish before the devouring fire of God’s judgment while believers in the Lord are guaranteed victory. Isaiah puts it well. The willing and obedient will eat the good of the land while those who rebel “shall be devoured…” (Isaiah 1:19,20).

Thought for the day

God’s love for His own is boundless; His wrath against His foes, endless.
