Trevor Rees-Jones (also known as Trevor Rees) is a British author and former bodyguard who was badly injured in the car crash in Paris that killed Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1997. Because he suffered a serious head injury from the crash, he does not recall any detail from the accident after he recovered. The power of recalling past events remains one of the best gifts of nature that can prevent repeating past mistakes, or making wrong choices and decisions.
The Israelites were close to entering the land of Canaan in fulfilment of God’s promise. Moses, their leader, while calling them to faith and obedience to God, recounted to them His past interventions and miracles. His intention was for Israel to always remember and retain the goodness of God in their memory. The charge was necessary because with the promised prosperity of their new abode, comes the danger of forgetting God and the temptation to become materialistic like their sinful neighbours.
The phrase “remember the Lord” is repeated severally in the Bible. Remembering the goodness of God is the remedy for fainting in times of difficulties or backsliding in times of increasing prosperity. Additionally, we ought to remember God’s provisions in our lives and the many battles He has helped us to win. Such memories will shore up our faith to face any challenge that may confront us.
The most extraordinary goodness to remember is our salvation and preservation from sin. If you have been saved from the tyranny of sin by God’s wonderful grace, you should be eternally grateful to Him. Remembering God’s goodness always opens up a well of unlimited favour from Him.
