His Pain, Our Cure

Key Verse

“But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5).

TEXT — Isaiah 53:1-6

Message

A young woman once battled a chronic illness for years. Doctor after doctor treated her, and prayer after prayer was offered for her, yet relief was not forthcoming. One day, while reading Isaiah 53, something clicked when she reached the words “by His stripes we are healed.” Not only physically but also emotionally, spiritually, and mentally, she began to see herself from a new perspective. She realised her sickness had been underwritten, and that she was already healed in ways that medicine could never touch. Although healing didn’t come all at once, something deeper took root in her heart. She believed the report, and that belief changed everything. She eventually recovered.

Isaiah prophesied of Christ’s suffering for humanity’s salvation in this text. His pain purchased our cure. The prophet began by describing Christ’s obscure and humble background. Jesus came without fanfare. No royal robes, no grand procession, but the quiet footsteps of a man the world barely noticed. Isaiah describes Him as having “no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.” Yet beneath the plainness was the divine power to save. He was Heaven’s remedy, wrapped in human flesh, sent to undo all that Satan and sin had done to the human race.

Christ’s earthly sojourn was one of rejection, sorrow, and pain. The world turned away from Him, scorning the very One sent to bring deliverance and the fullness of heaven’s blessings on it. Yet He did not recoil from the pain. Instead, He embraced it, paying the price for our freedom from all the consequences of our transgressions and iniquities. But there’s more. He didn’t just carry the burden of our sin; He bore our sicknesses and our griefs. Every lash on His back, every bruise on His body, speaks of healing, not only for the soul but also for the brokenness in our lives. By His stripes, we are healed, and the New Testament confirms this is true (Matthew 8:16,17; 1 Peter 2:24).

Nevertheless, there’s a requirement woven into the text: belief. “Who has believed our report?” Isaiah asks. The benefits of Christ’s atonement are available but not automatic. We must receive them by faith. Healing flows where belief lives. The report must be accepted before its blessings are experienced. We must believe in Jesus as our Saviour before we can be saved. We must also believe that by His stripes we are healed before we can experience His healing for our bodies and minds.
