God Is Equitable to All

Key Verse

“I was also upright before him, and have kept myself from mine iniquity. Therefore the LORD hath recompensed me according to my righteousness; according to my cleanness in his eye sight” (2 Samuel 22:24,25).

TEXT — 2 Samuel 22:24-30

Message

Benito Amilcar Andrea Mussolini ruled Italy from 1922 to 1943 with an iron fist. His assertive law, which he called ‘the natural law,’ was grounded on the fact that the stronger people should subject and dominate the inferior people. He employed his journalistic wit and aggressive political craft to ruthlessly suppress all voices of dissent. He brutally stamped fascist ideology upon the socio-political terrain of Italy. He sowed the wind and eventually reaped the whirlwind. A sit always ends with all despotic rulers, he was finally caught in the web of his infamous alliance with Germany’s Adolf Hitler towards the end of the Second World War. The tide turned against him as he was fleeing Italy; the communist partisans he had mercilessly oppressed caught up with him, and Clara Petacci, his mistress. He and Clara were executed, and their bodies hung up in the public square as a spectacle for all.

David’s memorable last song in our text captures vividly the character of God’s reciprocity. The Lord recompenses the godly with goodness. He never fails to remember the haughty and the ungodly, too. As he brought brutal Mussolini down, so did He against all the adversaries of God and David, His servant. God’s mercy upon David delivered him from such enemies as Goliath and the Philistines, and palace coup plotters like Absalom and Ahithophel.

Make God your lamp, and He will lighten your darkness. He will turn your night into a bright day. God is impartial to all. He who cultivates God’s grace will find Christ standing for him in the desperate hours of his life. Whoever chooses the path of selfish oppression of others in disregard of the reverential fear of God and His word will copiously be recompensed with divine wrath ultimately. Yet those who esteem God’s word incomparably better than mere bread and unquestionably submits to His will are assured of His unmerited favours. It is wisdom to stand on God’s side than risk His fiery judgement that has no appeal.
