Faith Versus Fear

Key Verse

“By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment” (Hebrews 11:23).

TEXT — Hebrews 11:23-25

Message

John G. Paton was discouraged from going to New Hebrides Islands by some people in the church after it was learnt that two Scottish missionaries who were sent there were killed and eaten by cannibals upon arrival. One elderly man warned that he would be eaten by cannibals. Paton replied, “I confess to you, that if I can but live and die serving and honouring the Lord Jesus, it will make no difference to me whether I am eaten by cannibals or by worms; and in the Great Day my resurrected body will arise as fair as yours in the likeness of our risen Redeemer”. After fifteen years of fruitful ministry, almost everyone on the island, where Paton ministered, was converted.

Moses’ life and faith is an example for us today. When he was born, Moses was hid three months, contrary to Pharaoh’s instructions to have all male children killed. His parents exercised faith instead of fear, even though they knew the consequences. Those who know their God do exploits under adverse conditions. Moses himself, when he was of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to identify with the Hebrew slaves.

Many Israelites were paralysed with fear due to Pharaoh’s decree. A fair weather Hebrew who finds himself in the palace, like Moses, will not consider identifying himself with the suffering children of God at such times. But Moses chose the future, placed his stake with the people of God and risked all to gain it all.

Those who walk by sight are unwilling to risk anything. As long as you are unprepared to risk it all by faith, you cannot realise the full potential of your life. Serving God is not a guarantee of an easy life; but people of faith will sail through and earn unforgettable rewards here and in heaven.
