“That your generations may know that I made the children of Israel to dwell in booths, when I brought them out of the land of Egypt I am the LORD your God” (Leviticus 23:43).
TEXT — Leviticus 23:33-34
In an agrarian society, harvest is usually with celebration of successful and plentiful harvest. Various societies and the religious celebrate harvest times differently. History tells us that harvest festivals were believed to date back to ancient Britain. Various activities usually features during harvest time and these are: feasting with foods that are drawn from the crops that come to maturity at the time of festival, eating, merriments, music and contests are common features. Some unwisely give the honor to their idols. Plans are usually put in place to conserve the fruit of the harvest.
The Israelites in today’s passage were asked to celebrate the feast of tabernacles, also called the feast of in-gathering. They were to dwell in booths as a means of remembering their journey in the wilderness. Everybody – old and young, rich and poor –was to dwell in booths for seven days. They were instructed by this to be humble and remember that there is no basis for personal glory – that humans are just unworthy but blessed recipients of God’s blessings, who bestows and dispenses His goodness to all the way He pleases. The harvest was seen as a fulfilment of God’s blessings and they were to rejoice in all their increase and in all the works of their hands.
Similarly, believers should not forget their deliverance from sin and the power of the enemy. We should be involved in harvesting of souls into the kingdom of God and this should be the cause of rejoicing. We are to be humble and avoid any form of pride. As Israel gathered together for this occasion, we also should not forge tour mandatory gatherings for weekly services and seasonal meetings like, conferences and the Global Crusade with Kumuyi GCK programmes.
Thought for the day
The joy of harvesting souls surpasses any accomplishment.
Listed among “500 most powerful people on the planet” by the Foreign Policy magazine in 2013, Pastor (Dr.) William F. Kumuyi is the founder and General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry (DCLM) headquartered in Lagos, Nigeria. DCLM started in 1973 as a 15-member Bible study group right in Kumuyi’s apartment at University of Lagos where he was a lecturer. His revolutionary Bible teaching on personal holiness and commitment to evangelism soon gained so much traction and resulted in a widespread revival.
