Key Verse

“And it came to pass after this, that David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the LORD said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron” (2 Samuel 2:1).

Text: 2 Samuel 2:1-7

A blind man that does not follow the leading of his guide will sooner or later fall into a ditch. Humans are myopic and shortsighted. They need the guidance of God almighty who sees the end from the beginning. God is all-seeing and all-knowing. He is perfect and is not capable of making mistakes. Every human being, therefore, needs to seek His face through prayer before taking any important step or embarking on any journey in life. We need God’s perfect guidance in all areas of life such as marriage, choice of profession or business, where to work or where to settle.
King Saul and his son, Jonathan, the bosom friend of David, had died and Israel mourned for them. After this, David turned to God to know whether he should relocate or not, to which of the cities of Judah should he head, if God gave him permission. God immediately answered him, telling him to relocate to Hebron where he was subsequently to be officially anointed as king. It is important to note the prompt obedience of David, the man after God’s own heart. When a believer prays for God’s leading, it is necessary to show prompt obedience just as David demonstrated.
The goodwill message of David to the people of Jabeshgilead is equally instructive. Even though King Saul died as his enemy, David did not see him as such, but considered him a respectable and anointed servant of God. David showed deep appreciation to the people of Jabeshgilead who had honoured King Saul following the desecration of his body by the Philistines.
As believers, we should not see any human being as an enemy. The only enemy we have is Satan. We are commanded to recompense to no man evil for evil (Romans 12:17-21). Besides, like David, we should always seek God’s leading as we journey through life.
