The Scarlet Thread
Saturday, March 28, 2026Key Verse
“Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window…thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father’s household, home unto thee” (Joshua 2: 18).
Text — Joshua 2:8-21
Message
This is the story of the redemption of a chronic sinner and her household. Scarlet is red, the colour of blood. During the first Passover in Egypt, the Israelites were ordered to apply the blood of a lamb on their doorposts to make the Angel of Death avoid their houses. The lamb points to Jesus, the ultimate Passover Lamb.
In our text, Rahab, the harlot, begged the spies for her life and those of her relations. She was given the scarlet thread as a token of the covenant between her and the spies. Upon seeing the scarlet thread, the Israelites spared all the inhabitants of Rahab’s house during the destruction of Jericho. The scarlet thread points to the ultimate sacrifice of Christ for humanity. The condition of abiding in the house given for the safety of the people points to the need to remain in Christ after our salvation. Sinful youths who come under the blood of Jesus, the sinless Lamb of God will be saved and preserved from the calamities that will soon come upon the world.
