“And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days” (1 Kings 17:15).
TEXT — 1 Kings 17:9-16
Message
Many people think of God as if He is a man. They hear His words but do not accept them literally. Somewhere in their subconscious mind, they interpret the word of God as a story from a past era, and not meant for the people of this age. But the underlying reason for this is unbelief that what God said cannot happen literally today.
It should have sounded far-fetched for Elijah to accept that a raven, an unclean bird, and later, a widow and foreigner would be the instruments of God’s strategy to care for His servant. But he knew God well enough to recognise that whatever He said would be done. So, with confidence, Elijah went in search of the woman of Zarephath. When he found her, he asked for a cup of water. And as the woman was going to fetch it, he pleaded with her to bring a morsel of bread to him also.
The woman responded like most people would do today, protesting that things were so tough, that she had nothing but a handful of flour and little oil, with which she was going to make a meal for herself and her son, and thereafter, starve to death, as she had nothing else left in the house. Elijah assured her not to be afraid, but to go ahead and make a little cake for him first, and then, prepare whatever was left for herself and her son. And then, he declared the word of God, that there would neither be waste nor lack in her family until God sent rain again on the land. Quite promptly, the woman did as she was told, and she did not lack food all through the famine period, “according to the word of the Lord, which he spake by Elijah.”
No matter how hard our situation is today, we must not stop expecting God’s intervention and care. All He demands from us is to believe that He will fulfil His promises. As the widow expressed faith by handing to Elijah almost all the food she had in the house, so we must take God at His word. This is what brings miraculous provisions from heaven. We must never forget that, no matter how far-fetched it may seem, God will always keep His word.
