Mutual Love

Key Verse

“Therefore, my brethren dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, my dearly beloved” (Philippians 4:1).

TEXT — Philippians 4:1-3

Message

Francis Charles, a religious poet who lived in England between 1592 and 1644, extols the indispensable virtue of love when he says, “If thou neglectest thy love to thy neighbour, in vain thou professest thy love to God; for by thy love to God, the love of thy neighbour is begotten, and by love to thy neighbour thy love to God is nourished.” This profound statement reflects love’s central place in Christendom, as espoused and demonstrated in the Scripture.

In this passage, Apostle Paul sets a pattern of affection and love that should exist between ministers and members of their churches and denominations. While familiarity should not lead to disrespect or disregard, a warm and vibrant fellowship should exist amongst God’s people in the church. His affection for the church in Philippi is reflected in the epistle.

Leaders and church members should ensure a balanced and holy fellowship with one another. We must have a heartfelt and lively interaction devoid of sensuality. Leaders of God’s people should be interested in the minutest details about their lives, knowing when followers are absent, sick, bereaved, hungry, and showing genuine concern to alleviate those challenges.

The high point of Apostle Paul’s humble disposition towards other labourers in the vineyard is that he never considered them inferior. Even though he was an apostle of note, he addressed them as fellow labourers whose names are in the book of life. Following the Apostle’s example, we are to serve one another in humility, and our brethren must not be belittled because of their lowly estate but be given a sense of belonging. We must also sacrificially labour to rescue and win the lost, and warn the righteous while keeping ourselves in the love of God, awaiting His coming.

Thought for the day

Love is the defining feature of our Christian profession.
