TEXT — 2 Kings 4:1-7

Message

In the winter of 2023, in a small rural town in Oklahoma, USA, a single mother named Sarah, with two young children, faced severe financial hardship. She had lost her job, and the harsh winter brought increased heating costs. With dwindling food supplies and mounting bills, she felt overwhelmed, worried and anxious, not knowing how to survive the winter. One evening, a local church assembly anonymously delivered a box of groceries and a gift card to cover her heating expenses. Later, it was discovered that a group of people from her children’s school had come together to provide these items. This act of kindness, at a moment of desperation, reinforced her faith, that even in hard times, God’s care is shown through the actions of others.

The story in our text today cannot be better illustrated than with such an apt contemporary experience of people that put their faith and confidence in God at a time of uncertainty and a future that is largely unpredictable. The widow woman had lost her husband who was a faithful servant of God. This indicates clearly that no one is immune from life’s unpredictable hazards. Fortunately, the story does not end in total helplessness as the woman was wise enough to seek solution from the right source. She reached out to Elisha, the prophet of God, who decreed a miraculous increase through a simple act of faith. Having had the background and experience in the supernatural ways of God, she simply obeyed the man of God. Her obedience paid off when her little oil was miraculously multiplied and sufficient to pay off her debt and prevent her children from being taken away by her creditors. She indeed had more than enough to take care of her bills and expenses. In fact, the Bible further reveals that after paying her creditors she and her children lived off the income derived from the sale of the rest of the oil.

Our God is still in the business of divine supply in times of needs. Whatever the fearful data or worrying statistics coming from any government about a depressing economic situation, remember that saints of God belong to a kingdom that never runs out of provision. This New Year is pregnant with divine surprises! When we seek solution from the right source, we shall definitely experience the right intervention.
