“The Narrow Way”

Key Verse

“Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it” (Matthew 7:14)

TEXT — Matthew 7:13,14

Message

The Latin word Via Dolorosa, which means “Sorrowful Way,” is a processional route in the Old City of Jerusalem. It represents the path taken by Jesus, forced by the Roman soldiers, on the way to His crucifixion. The winding route from the former Antonia Fortress to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre – about 600 metres (2,000 feet) – is celebrated today for Christian pilgrimage. The route is a constant reminder to visitors of the old city of Jerusalem, of the pains and extreme inconveniences on the way to Christ’s crucifixion.

Today’s text is taken from the concluding chapter of Christ’s Sermon on the Mount. In one of the most important sermons ever delivered, Christ presented the requirement for heaven with brilliant efficiency. In particular, he talked about the narrow way and the strait gate. The use of the gate here is metaphoric. The little back gate often used to access the city of Jerusalem was said to be as narrow as the “eye of the needle.” The gate is so strait or restricted that it requires utmost concentration to pass through it successfully.

The strait gate symbolises the prerequisites of repentance and faith in Jesus Christ as one’s Redeemer. This gateway to salvation cannot be modified to accommodate those who hold the notions of religious correctness or inclusivity without demonstrating genuine repentance. The gate neither allows those who cling to their self-righteousness nor relish their pet sins.

Additionally, those who successfully enter through the strait gate must be prepared to walk the narrow way of righteousness. There is no room for frivolity or worldliness on the journey to heaven. The way is narrow and the gate is strait.

Thought for the day

The call to repentance is personal; only you can answer it.
