“And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your minds by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled in the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight” (Colossians 1:21,22).
TEXT — Colossians 1:19-23
Message
In the forests of northern Europe and Asia lives a little animal called the ermine, known for his snow white fur in winter. He instinctively protects his white coat against anything that would soil it. Fur hunters take advantage of this unusual trait of the ermine. They do not set a snare to catch him, but instead they find his home, which is usually a cleft in a rock or a hollow in an old tree. They smear the entrance and interior with grime. Then the hunters set their dogs loose to find and chase the ermine. The frightened animal flees toward home but does not enter because of the filth. Rather than soil his white coat, he is trapped by the dogs and captured while preserving his purity. For the ermine, purity is more precious than life.
Paul emphasised the key role Christ played in the reconciliation of mankind to God. As our High Priest, He offered Himself and shed His blood for our redemption. His goal is to present us holy, spotless and unblameable in God’s sight. This whole plan is hinged on our continuing in the faith, grounded, and to ensure we have hope of eternal life.
Sanctification is a doctrine taught and elaborated upon in Scriptures. It is a definite Christian experience that sets us apart from the world. With inbred sin removed, we love God supremely and become more tied with His church and purpose. Inner struggles of the depraved nature are removed; inner peace reigns, and we serve the Lord in holiness with joy and fulfilment.
Church attendance is good, but not enough to possess the holiness experience. We must pray in faith and thirst for it until we receive the fulfilment of the promise.
Thought for the day
We need grace, prayer and watchfulness to be preserved in holiness.
Listed among “500 most powerful people on the planet” by the Foreign Policy magazine in 2013, Pastor (Dr.) William F. Kumuyi is the founder and General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry (DCLM) headquartered in Lagos, Nigeria. DCLM started in 1973 as a 15-member Bible study group right in Kumuyi’s apartment at University of Lagos where he was a lecturer. His revolutionary Bible teaching on personal holiness and commitment to evangelism soon gained so much traction and resulted in a widespread revival.
