Key Verse
“Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good” (Romans 12:9).
TEXT — Romans 12:9-21
Message
John Mason, the American author and gospel minister, once said, “The true measure of a person is in his height of ideals, the breadth of his sympathy, the depth of his convictions and the length of his patience.” The gold standard for all these virtues is LOVE. However, these days, love has acquired all sorts of distorted meanings that it has become necessary to always qualify the love of which we speak.
The text of our study portrays and advocates this type of love. It is sincere love for God and our neighbours. This love is the fountainhead of all the virtuous duties prescribed in this passage. It will enable us to hate every form of evil, embrace what is good and acceptable to God, and have preference for one another as Christians. This unfeigned love will empower us to shun laziness and to exercise earnestness in everything we do in our everyday life and in the work of the Kingdom.
The Christian who has true love will show kindness to others, especially people of the household of faith. He easily shares the tender feelings of others in their joyful seasons or sorrowful times. True Christian love is high, broad, deep and long enough to feed a hungry enemy and provide drink to a thirsty foe. Indeed, this is a triumphant love.
True Christian love is not a mere notion; it is a practical experience. As you place your spiritual life and commitment on the scale of today’s scriptural text, what do you weigh? You may see the need to sincerely resort to the Lord’s “throne of grace, that (you) may obtain mercy, and find grace” to measure up in the performance of these necessary godly duties.
Thought for the day
Satan is never smarter than when he drains a Christian of love.
