“And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird” (Revelation 18:2).
TEXT —Revelation 18:1-8
Message
History shows that there are several factors responsible for the collapse of civilisations. But one recurring decimal in all those events is the action and inaction of the people that populate each era. These internal contradictions eventually eat up the civilisation from within, leaving it vulnerable to the slightest pressure. In that state, it is only a matter of time before it falls.
In the book of Revelation, Babylon symbolises the corrupt world system that is filled with evil deeds and sinful behaviour, hindering God’s purpose on earth. This system is destined for destruction, as proclaimed by a powerful angel illuminating the earth. The downfall of Babylon is a result of its indulgence in sinful pleasures, rejection of God, idolatry, greed, and exploitation of the weak for personal gain. John warns of the consequences of aligning oneself with this wicked system, urging people to escape its clutches to avoid facing the same fate. Ultimately, the message conveys the importance of staying true to God’s will and avoiding the temptations of the sinful world.
The iniquities of Babylon have come to remembrance before God, and the Lord will double her punishment in line with her conduct. Babylon had got away with evil for so long that she thought she would continue to reign and never face judgment or experience sorrow. Yet, the sentence is given: in one day, she will face death, mourning, and famine. The mighty God will burn her with fire and she will cease to exist.
Be warned. This world is coming to an end. God “hath appointed a day, in the which He will judge the world in righteousness.” This may sound farfetched to people today, especially those who have profited from the world’s evil system. But believers are cautioned to avoid being enchanted by wealth and riches and other trappings of the world. They must not be lulled into self-confidence and complacency because of the good things of this world, as that will draw away their heart from God and leave them vulnerable for judgment with the world. On the other hand, sinners must turn away from their sins and accept Jesus Christ as their Saviour.
Thought for the day
Staying in Babylon is akin to remaining in a house marked for demolition.
Listed among “500 most powerful people on the planet” by the Foreign Policy magazine in 2013, Pastor (Dr.) William F. Kumuyi is the founder and General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry (DCLM) headquartered in Lagos, Nigeria. DCLM started in 1973 as a 15-member Bible study group right in Kumuyi’s apartment at University of Lagos where he was a lecturer. His revolutionary Bible teaching on personal holiness and commitment to evangelism soon gained so much traction and resulted in a widespread revival.
Very inspirational for daily living
