“Amazing Love”

Key Verse

“I have loved you, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us? Was not Esau Jacob’s brother? saith the LORD: yet I loved Jacob” (Malachi 1:2).

TEXT —Malachi 1:1-5

Message

In our materialistic age, the word love has been grossly misapplied. It has been domiciled in a world system and has acquired all sorts of immoral and perverse meanings. This is a most unkind twist. Why? Because God Himself is the source and embodiment of true love. The Bible says that God is Love. From time to time, He has demonstrated this affection towards mankind. His giving His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, for our redemption reflects the true meaning of His love for the world.

Prophet Malachi narrates the moving story of God’s great love for Israel. Between Israel and his twin brother, Esau, the Lord prefers the former. “Yet I loved Jacob.” After his rejection, Esau (Edom) threatens to defy the Lord and build up what God brought down, and the Lord says, “They shall build, but I will throw down.” It is a love for His people that has been sustained from generation to generation.

Those God has chosen, He loves exceptionally and offers an invincible defence for such. He goes to any length to demonstrate this depthless fondness. It is this incomprehensible tenderness that all sincere followers of His Beloved Son Jesus Christ enjoy as long as they give Him reciprocal adoration. But it is not only the standing believers who can benefit from God’s benevolence. Sinners and backsliders who renounce their ways and penitently go to Him for pardon, cleansing, and rest are welcome.

The Church, which has been enjoying Christ’s great love through the ages, is looking forward to the final fulfillment of the expression of this true love as He comes to take His own to heaven to be with Him forever. This is a wake-up call for us to be more sincere and zealous in our toil for Him in return, not only for the promise of heaven but also for the providence of His protection, preservation, and provision we receive here in this life as a result of His incomprehensible love.
