Humility Is Key

Key Verse

“That which I see not teach thou me: if I have done iniquity, I will do no more” (Job 34:32).

TEXT — Job 34:31-37

Message

C.S. Lewis, a Christian writer, summarised how to measure one’s level of humility when he said, “The first step (to acquire humility) is to realise that (naturally) one is proud and if one thinks he is not conceited, it means he is very conceited indeed.” Real humility as prescribed by the Scriptures is becoming rare even among those who profess to possess the image of Christ today.

Elihu, who was younger than the three friends of Job, who visited him during his travails, had waited patiently for them to conclude their “push and pull” of Job before he spoke. His speech pointed out the supremacy of God and the frailty of man. Elihu presents humility as an indispensable quality for those who belong to God. Such people will be humble enough to ask God for direction, illumination and forgiveness when they err. He also chided Job for placing God on the same pedestal as man and reminded him that God will not reward him on his own terms but on His benevolence. Elihu did not fail to remind Job of the futility of multiplying words against God.

Humility in a believer’s life is a product of sincere appraisal of himself in the light of God’s expectation. It is placing oneself on God’s measuring scale, willingly accepting the verdict of the scale and taking steps to correct deviations where necessary. The natural man is filled with pride. He is proud of his position, place, possession, power and progress. He boasts of his credentials before God and forgets that no proud person can be justified before Him.

Heaven-minded believers must possess and demonstrate humility before God and men. They must resort to Him in all matters of life, knowing that they are helpless without Him. Humility pays! (James 4:6).

Thought for the day

If you are not humble before God and man, you will be humbled by God and man.
