“God’s Feast”

Key Verse

“And, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD; Speak unto every feathered fowl, and to every beast of the field, Assemble yourselves, and come; gather yourselves on every side to my sacrifice that I do sacrifice for you… that ye may eat flesh, and drink blood” (Ezekiel 39:17).

TEXT — Ezekiel 39:17-29

Message

Some decades ago, missionaries in a desert kingdom used the occasion of a sumptuous feast organised by the monarch to explain to some Arabs why they and their families had left their civilised Western Hemisphere abodes to live and preach Christ in the desert. In addition to teaching salvation, the Christians provided education and built hospitals, roads, and small industries. The king thought the followers of Christ did all that to ‘bribe’ their way into heaven. But the missionaries said heaven was already prepared for them by Christ and that going worldwide to preach Him was to appreciate Him for giving them heaven, not to earn it. They were obeying His command to reveal Him to the whole of humanity. They said they would evangelise anywhere to honour Him.

In the latter days, God would also prepare an excellent feast for His people, Israel. He will put down the armies of those warring in rebellion against the land of His chosen. These rebels are identified as Gog and Magog. They are the princes of the world who have been feasting on the children of Jacob and, by extension, on the followers of the Lord Jesus Christ. They had seen Israel as easy prey, unaware that the land was only experiencing the Lord’s wrath for their transgressions. But, according to Ezekiel’s prophecy, Israel’s restoration was on the way when God would invite His people to a party to feast on their enemies.

At the time of God’s utterances, Israel was in captivity in Babylon. But at the feast, the Lord says He would explain His actions and let the children of Israel know, “I am the LORD their God, which caused them to be led into captivity among the heathen: but I have gathered them unto their own land…Neither will I hide my face any more from them.”

As with the case of Israel, believers can rest assured that there may be turbulence on their path but in the end, the loving providence of God will prevail. God has the best interest of His people at heart and will chastise them where necessary but will restore them when they turn to Him.

Thought for the day

It is comforting to know that everything the Lord allows is for our good.
