Message
“When it costs us but little to give, the treasure laid up in heaven is a small one. The widow’s mite given in sacrifice weighs more heavily in the eternal scales than the bulging granaries of the rich man,” says Bruce R. McConkie. In the story about the widow’s mite, Jesus observes people giving offerings at the Temple in Jerusalem. Found among the wealthy donors is a destitute widow who quietly contributes two small copper coins, known as lepta. These coins worth very little, but her sacrifice was immense. Jesus praises her, emphasizing that she gave more than the rich people because she gave all she had. The widow’s mite symbolizes selflessness, sacrificial giving, and the value of the heart behind an offering. Her tiny gift echoes through time, reminding us that generosity in the sight of God isn’t measured by quantity but by the giving spirit.
In modern usage, the term “widow’s mite” refers to any small but meaningful contribution that represents great sacrifice on the giver’s part. It transcends mere monetary value, illustrating that even the seemingly insignificant can hold great significance.
