“The Symbolic Serpent”
Monday, June 2, 2025Key Verse
‘’And the Lord said unto Moses, make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it shall live’’ (Numbers 21:8).
Text —Numbers 21:4-9
Message
Symbols are used to represent something else. The fiery serpent lifted and set upon a pole in the wilderness church was symbolic of the crucifixion of Christ on the cross of Calvary. This serpent figure points to how the serpent was instrumental to the fall of mankind and had bitten man severally with the sting of sin and carnality. Through murmuring, the children of Israel incurred the wrath of God’s displeasure and were killed by serpents. Through Moses’ intercessory prayer, God revealed His redemptive plan and prescribed the lifting of the brazen serpent upon a pole which is a pointer to Christ (John 3:14).
The instruction to those bitten by the serpent was to look up and ensure they saw the brazen serpent lifted upon the pole. Only those who can see the Lord Jesus spiritually on the cross can be free from the tyranny of the flesh and Satan. You are not expected to be looking down in self-pity, guilt and condemnation, rather seek to see Jesus and all will be well.
