The Scarlet Thread
Monday, October 20, 2025Key Verse
“Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father’s household, home unto thee.” Joshua 2:18
Text — Joshua 2:14-19
Message
Joshua, the leader of Israel sent two spies to Jericho in obedience to God’s instruction. The mission of the spies was to view the land and bring back reports that would strengthen the Faith of God’s people. This would also encourage them to move ahead to conquer the land and possess their inheritance. When the two spies got to Jericho, they entered into the house of a woman named Rahab. God granted the spies favour in the sight of this sinful woman. In return, she also received God’s mercy and salvation. It took a lot of courage for Rahab to hide the spies in her house. She was willing to risk her life because she had heard about the great things God had done for the children of Israel. She believed that their God was and is still the only true God.
Rahab not only believed- she acted. She showed that her faith was real. By tying the scarlet thread to her window, she showed that she believed her life would be spared. Although Rahab believed in God, it was the scarlet thread which symbolizes the blood that Jesus would shed that saved her. Even though we believe in God, it is the blood of Jesus that saves us. Merely believing that God exists will not save us just as Rahab’s belief alone could not have saved her. She had to do something: she had to tie the scarlet thread where it could be seen. There is only one way we can be saved from the destruction of sin: by asking Jesus to forgive us and cleanse our hearts with His precious blood.
