“Self-Examination”

Key Verse

“Examine yourselves whether ye be in faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates” (1 Corinthians 13:5).

Text —1 Corinthians 13:5-8

Message

In verse 5 of our text, the Greek word used for “examine” (dokimazo [dok-im-ad’-zo]) can variously mean to test, to prove, to discern or to try. Too many people look at this admonition as a once-a-year personal spiritual inventory, but it is not. Our text of today tells us to check if we are still Christians. To be sure, going back to sin takes one off the faith. To “examine” can also mean “to test in order to determine progress.” A poor result after a spiritual self-examination is not a death sentence but a call to positive change to set things right. If you find yourself cold or lukewarm or outright backslidden on self-examination, quickly repent. Cain, Korah, Dathan, Abiram as well as Judas Iscariot refused to repent even when cautioned, and suffered the consequences. Rahab on the other hand was a harlot but when the fear of God came into her heart, she followed God’s people by faith and was blessed (Hebrews 11:31).

Daily self-examination under the searchlight of God’s word is good for every believer to maintain a close walk with God.

Quote

The fear of God came into her heart

Challenge

Self-examination is a humbling act, but essential.

Prayer for today

Lord, help me to daily search my heart.
