“And Jethro said, Blessed be the LORD, who hath delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh, who hath delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians” (Exodus 18:10).
TEXT — Exodus 18:1-12
Message
A young man lost his father shortly after he was admitted into the university. He was later afflicted with strange sickness that defied all medical antidotes. His condition threatened not just his academic career, but also his life. He consulted spiritualists for his healing to no avail. While dying on his sickbed, he quietly cried to God for healing and vowed to serve Him if He could deliver him. God visited him the moment he prayed. He fell asleep and woke up healthy.
God still delivers today. Today’s text examines how Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses, visited him alongside Zipporah, Moses’ wife and her two sons. During the visit, Moses testified to what God did to Pharaoh and the Egyptians for the sake of Israel. He also recounted all the challenges that the children of Israel faced in the wilderness and how God delivered them “out of the hand of the Egyptians”. In response, Jethro blessed the God of Israel for the great miracles and wonders He performed in the midst of His people. He then sacrificed a burnt offering in appreciation of God’s mercy towards Israel.
Just as Jethro visited Moses, believers must cultivate the habit of visiting other brethren in times of challenges and rejoicing. Moses gave a comprehensive account of how God delivered Israel, parted the Red Sea for them and fed them with manna. Likewise, we should be in the habit of testifying about His goodness and mercy towards us.
The same God who delivered Israel under Moses is our God. He still delivers today. However, He delivers particularly those who accept His lordship and continue on the path of faith. As faithful believers, there may be challenges on our path; God promises to deliver us as we call upon Him.
